- Notes
This is the only photo in the collection that indicates one of the men shown is Edgar Cramp himself, and even here is unclear which of the men is “I” and which is “him”.
Behind Edgar and his messmate is a Short Type 166 – with the shape of the engine cover indicating it is 161, first of the series. According to Ark Royal’s log, 161 was tasked with operating over the landing site of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps on the day of the landing, 25 April 1915, and subsequent days, undertaking reconnaissance and spotting for Royal Navy warships, including HMS Triumph and HMS Queen Elizabeth. The plane’s regular pilot was Flight Commander, later Group Captain, Cecil Francis Kilner, Royal Marine Light Infantry.
