Notes

The photo shows a football match in Salonika between the crew of Ark Royal and HMS Exmouth, a 14,000 ton pre-Dreadnought battleship that served in the Dardanelles and Salonika Campaigns.

Edgar’s notes on the back of the photo suggest he may have been one of the linesmen in the 4-1 loss to the Exmouth’s crew.

“Gar running with flag, other side” could be a reference to Walter Hugh Stewart Garnett, b1891 Monmouthshire, joined Ark Royal January 4, 1915.

The ground was located close to what was then the 2nd Greek Military Hospital, which in 1927 became the home of the Faculty of Philosophy of the Aristotle University.

In the background of the photo are the gravestones of an extensive Jewish cemetery, which was destroyed by occupying Germans during World War II and subsequently covered over with new buildings associated with the university.
